Questions Insurance Agents Should Ask Medicare Prospects

The Medicare Advantage Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) began a week ago – and we know how important it is to ensure you fact-find effectively with each client. It can be hard to determine whether or not a potential Medicare client would best benefit from enrolling in a Medicare Advantage Plan or keeping Original Medicare and adding a Medicare Supplement plan. As all insurance agents know – each client is unique, so there is no set formula. However, we have put together some of what we consider to be the most effective fact-finding questions that will surely help you better understand your clients’ Medicare needs.

  • How long have you been enrolled in your current policy? What made you choose that policy?
  • Do you have any chronic conditions?
  • What prescription drugs do you take, and how much do you spend on prescription drugs?
  • Do you travel often? If so, where?
  • What doctors do you see regularly, and for what type of care?
  • Are you opposed to switching doctors?
  • Are you eligible for health care coverage other than Medicare? Will you keep it after retirement?
  • How much did you spend on health care last year?
  • What is your budget for health care?
  • Will you need assistance with your Medicare premiums?
  • What funds do you have in place to cover any unexpected hospital bills?
  • If I could offer you precisely what you are looking for in a plan, how would you describe it?
  • Is there anyone else in your household who is eligible for Medicare?

With your knowledge of Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans, you should be able to use these questions to help find a coverage plan that works for both their medical and financial needs.
