Unicare health insurance was created in 1995 as an operating affiliate of Wellpoint, a managed care company. Unicare is the name for most of the Wellpoint health business operating outside of California. Some of the brands merged into Unicare health insurance over time include:
- Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company
- John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company
- Rush Prudential Health Plans in Illinois
The acquisition of these companies has allowed Unicare to provide health and medical insurance to a broader range of people and provide more services to their customers. Unicare health insurance is run so that each unit of Unicare insurance has it’s own separate marketing, enrolling, and servicing system. For example, large employers and group business are run through the Massachusetts Mutual and John Hancock acquisitions. These companies have a national focus so that Unicare health and medical insurance can provide multi-state services for large employers. Other units of Unicare health insurance are localized and have a regional focus. These regional segments of Unicare insurance include individual, senior, and small business.
